Clomiphene Citrate Challenge Test

The Clomiphene Citrate Challenge Test (CCCT) assesses ovarian reserve.

First, we measure the patient’s day 2 or 3 FSH and estradiol hormone levels. Then the patient begins a five day cycle of taking 100 mg of Clomiphene citrate on cycle days 5 – 9. Her FSH level is drawn again on day 10. If FSH levels are elevated either on day 2-3 or on day 10, the findings are abnormal.

Abnormal findings on a CCCT test indicate that ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization (IVF) is unlikely to be successful. The only option for many of these patients is to use another woman’s eggs (donor eggs).
