The sonohysterogram is similar to the hysterosalpingogram except that the uterus is filled with saline (rather than dye) using a small catheter and a transvaginal ultrasound is performed simultaneously. The saline provides contrast and lifts the two surfaces of the uterine lining apart, enabling detection of intrauterine abnormalities.
