Dr. David Smithson

Reproductive Endocrinologist / Fertility Specialist

I have called Edmonton home for over seven years, having worked at PCRM since its opening and helping many families achieve their goal of building their families.

I graduated from Queen’s University’s Smith School of Business in Kingston, Ontario and then earned my medical degree from Western University’s Schulich School of
Medicine & Dentistry in London, Ontario. I remained there for my residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and was then granted fellowship through certication with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. I completed my subspecialty training in Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility through the Ottawa Fertility Centre. In 2019, I returned to the east to Queen's University to complete my MBA.

My primary goal is to provide the best evidence-based reproductive care with a patient-centric focus. My clinical interests include third-party reproduction and male factor infertility. My research interests focus on health economics and decision modelling, a topic on which I have published peer-reviewed journal articles and has made several oral presentations. Medical education is important to me, and I serve as both a Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility resident rotation coordinator and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta.

I have been involved in several professional organizations including the Council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility committee of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada. Most recently, I was elected to a three-year term to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband Stephen and our golden doodle Scarlett, running in the river valley, performing in community musical theatre, and playing with a concert band here in Edmonton.
