Breaking the Silence: What We Wish More People Knew About Infertility
Infertility is often invisible. Behind polite smiles and everyday routines, many individuals are navigating hormone injections, appointments, loss, and uncertainty.
During Canadian Fertility Awareness Week, we asked our team:
What do you wish more people understood about infertility?
Here’s what we hear most often.
1. It’s Not Your Fault
Infertility is a medical condition, not a result of stress, ambition, past choices, or “waiting too long.” Blame is common, but it’s misplaced. Patients often carry quiet guilt. One of the most important things we can say is this: You did not cause this.
2. Male Factor Is Common
Roughly 30% of infertility cases involve male factors. Fertility is a shared responsibility. Testing both partners early allows for a clearer understanding and avoids unnecessary delays. A simple semen analysis can provide critical information.
3. You Don’t Always Have to Wait a Year
Age matters in fertility. If you’re over 35, most guidelines recommend seeking help after 6 months of trying. If you’re over 40, an evaluation even sooner may be appropriate. Time is valuable, and clarity can prevent prolonged uncertainty.
4. IVF Isn’t the Only Option
Fertility treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Some patients benefit from lifestyle adjustments or medication alone. Others may pursue IUI, IVF, or egg freezing. Every plan is personalized based on diagnosis, age, and family goals.
5. Emotional Support Is Essential
Infertility impacts mental health. It affects relationships, identity, and future planning.
Support may include:
- Counseling
- Peer support groups
- Mindfulness strategies
- Open communication with your care team
Seeking emotional support is a strength, not a weakness.
Moving the Conversation Forward
Canadian Fertility Awareness Week reminds us that silence helps no one.
By speaking openly about infertility, we:
- Reduce stigma
- Encourage earlier care
- Support diverse family-building journeys
- Validate lived experiences
