Pride in Parenthood: Supporting Trans and Non-Binary Patients on Their Fertility Journey
For many trans and non-binary people, building a family is part of their life vision—but navigating fertility care can bring unique challenges. From gendered language to limited research, traditional fertility systems have not always supported gender-diverse patients. At the Pacific Centre for Reproductive Medicine (PCRM), we are committed to providing compassionate, inclusive, and evidence-based fertility care for all.
In honour of Pride Month, we want to affirm one vital truth: Your identity is valid. Your family dreams matter. And you deserve fertility care that reflects both.
Understanding Fertility Options for Trans and Non-Binary Patients
Trans and non-binary people may seek fertility care at different points in their journey, including:
- Before starting hormone therapy or gender-affirming surgeries: Many patients choose to preserve eggs or sperm in case they want biological children in the future.
- While undergoing hormone therapy: Depending on treatment, fertility may be affected, but options may still be available.
- After medical transition: Fertility treatment such as IVF, IUI, or use of donor gametes and surrogacy can support parenthood.
At PCRM, our fertility specialists offer personalized guidance based on your goals, current health, and future plans. We work closely with patients to create a plan that honors both medical needs and gender identity.
Creating a Gender-Affirming Fertility Experience
We know that many aspects of fertility care can be triggering for trans and non-binary people—from gendered intake forms to language used during procedures. At PCRM, we are working to change that:
- We listen to how you identify and how you want to be addressed.
- We provide emotional support through access to 2SLGBTQI+-experienced mental health professionals.
- We tailor care to honour your boundaries throughout every step.
Supporting the Whole Person
Fertility care is more than biology. It’s about identity, autonomy, and agency. Trans and non-binary patients often carry the weight of misinformation, stigma, and structural barriers. Our job is to lift those burdens, not add to them.
We offer:
- Guidance on fertility preservation before hormone therapy or surgery
- Fertility treatment plans that respect gender identity
- Connections to donor sperm or donor eggs for solo parents and couples
Moving Toward Equity in Reproductive Health
There is still much work to be done in reproductive medicine. But every patient we support is a step toward greater equity and inclusion.
At PCRM, we believe that fertility care should be affirming, empowering, and accessible to all. We are proud to support trans and non-binary individuals as they build families on their own terms. If you’re exploring your fertility options as a trans or non-binary person, we’re here to help. Obtain a referral to PCRM from a referring provider, and let's start your journey.
