What Is Expanded Carrier Screening? Your Questions, Answered

Posted on August 18, 2026

In our last post, we talked about how we all carry genetic conditions without knowing it and why carrier screening is often the only way to find out before starting a family. So what does that testing actually involve? Here's a straightforward breakdown.

What Is It?

Expanded carrier screening is genetic testing that looks at over 500 conditions to tell you which one(s) you carry. Rather than testing for just a handful of well-known conditions, this broader panel gives a much fuller picture of your carrier status.

How Do I Do It?

There are two easy ways for PCRM patients to complete the test:

Whichever option is more convenient for you works; the goal is simply to get a sample collected so testing can begin.

How Long Do I Wait for Results?

Results typically take approximately 3 weeks.

How Do I Get My Results?

You won't just receive a report and be left to interpret it alone. A genetic counsellor will review your results with you, walking through what they mean and answering any questions you have.

How Much Does It Cost?

Expanded carrier screening is $675 CAD per person.

What This Means for You

Expanded carrier screening isn't just a test; it comes with support built in at every step, from choosing your collection method to sitting down (virtually or in person) with a genetic counsellor to understand exactly what your results mean for your family-building plans.

If you and your partner both turn out to carry the same condition, that naturally raises the question: what happens next? In our final post in this series, we'll cover exactly that — the options available to couples who learn they're at risk, what the donor screening process looks like, and a few important myths about what carrier screening can and can't tell you.
